Game of Thrones fans will instantly recognize this song. It is from the famous intro scene of the sixth season’s final episode The winds of Winter. The song’s name is Light of the Seven and its composer is Ramin Djawadi.

It’s popular among youtubers as material to cover and has been covered even by large orchestras. The song received much praise, even outside the Game Of Thrones continuum.

I consider this song of the best soundtracks ever made. It’s just perfect in how it captures the dark mood of this more than 10 minutes long sequence of unfolding events. The composition with piano, strings, the organ and some sparse vocal action at certain, important stages, can hardly be made better.

The score was composed by Ramin Djawadi and recorded in multiple split sessions for the show. Djawadi played the organ and the piano himself.

The original version

This is how it appeared on the show. Performed by session musicians and the composer playing piano and the organ himself.

A more rockier version

This is a Panamese-German co-production. The piano has been replaced by electric guitar and gives it a more rocky note. The vocal part has been contributed by Alina Lesnik, a young and talented German rock and metal vocalist with a beautiful soprano voice.

A more classic version recorded by an orchestra

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra recorded this version and it certainly does give it a very special touch.

There are probably more awesome cover versions and I’ll update this article when I find some.
